Clock in bronze gilded with mercury.

Caption

Clock in bronze gilded with mercury, attributed to Jean-Jacques François-Régis de Cambacérès,
early 19th century, 56 x 29 x 12 cm.
Most of the symbolic elements of the French Rite of the period are depicted on this fine piece, which belonged to one of the highest dignitaries of Imperial Freemasonry: three groups of three tools on the pedestal, the beehive and the well of lost knowledge of the 2nd Order, J and B columns topped with globes, a menorah, Rosicrucian symbols, etc. The radiant decoration features the acacia and the star with the letter G, whilst the dial bears the spirit level at its centre. The hands themselves are shaped like a trowel and a compass.
