Moustiers earthenware basket from the “25 Symbols” service, 4th quarter of the 18th century, height 10 cm and 30 x 21.5 cm.
This exquisite piece from the ‘25 Symbols’ service (so named for the number of figures depicted) is undoubtedly the most prestigious French Masonic production in the field of ceramic arts from the 18th century. Its creation has sometimes been attributed to Fouque, but it is more likely that Féraud was the designer. Both men, incidentally, were members of the Moustiers lodge Les Indissolubles, which included many pottery makers. Behind the apparent disorder of the composition, the arrangement of the motifs follows a Masonic spatial logic and constitutes a sort of exhaustive iconographic attempt at depicting Masonic symbols. Some thirty pieces from this service are known to exist worldwide, including a second basket on display at the National Ceramics Museum in Sèvres.
