Title
Faience flask.
Caption
‘Aux deux Frères’ flask in Nevers earthenware, last quarter of the 18th century, height 25 cm and width 15 cm.
This flask, with its Rococo-style handles, reflects a sense of brotherhood, displayed unashamedly by two Freemasons in the late 1780s or early revolutionary period. It also discreetly recalls, in coded Masonic language, that it is ‘between the square and the compass’ that the Master is found when he is lost.
